Improved Energy Delivery
To improve access to energy in the displaced setting, HEED will:
a) Expand the evidence base upon which decisions about demand for energy services amongst displaced communities are made by building a portfolio of 2 country-based quantitative surveys and 40 qualitative case studies based on primary fieldwork with displaced people, humanitarian workers and energy providers in the Kigeme, Nyabiheke, or Gihembe camps in Rwanda, and with internally displaced populations living in the Uttargaya and Khalte in Nepal.
b) Translate research findings into an ‘energy for displacement’ protocol and prototypes for use by humanitarian agencies in procurement processes and by the private sector in the future production of sustainable technologies for lighting, cooking and decentralised energy generation through three ‘Design for Displacement’ (D4D) workshops in the UK, Rwanda and Nepal, and seek input and feedback from key stakeholders through twelve ‘Energy for End users’ (E4E) designathons in displacement settings.
c) Design, implement and monitor new energy systems to include pilot cooking systems, lighting systems and the use of micro-grids that connect people, products, processes and policies in Rwanda and Nepal.
d) Analyse households’ energy consumption behaviour to ascertain if energy availability meets, exceeds or is insufficient for the basic needs of displaced people.
e) Develop, deploy and evaluate intelligent distribution systems that take into account community and needs.
f) Contribute to knowledge about energy access, energy demand, energy provision and energy monitoring in contexts of forced displacement and global poverty through ten contributions to peer reviewed academic journals
