Rwanda: Gihembe Photo Gallery

Photo portfolios

In 2019, we commissioned the humanitarian photographer Edoardo Santangelo, to document the impact of the HEED energy interventions on Gihembe refugee camp, Rwanda. Working with the community, HEED installed renewable multi-function solar street lighting, which saw public use of community spaces alter as amenities and activites could be accessed for longer. The street lights give residents a tangible sense of belonging and community pride as the camp is visible at night from afar. In doing so, there is an increased feeling of security as residents have greater freedom of movement at night. These images capture the lived experience of how improved access to energy become stories of change.
